Marais and Viviers are top archers - Submitted by editor, 21/06/2011 - Archery

Francois Marais and Beanta Viviers, both of SKW Archers Club, won the Men and Women’s Open categories respectively at the Namibia National Archery Championships in Windhoek on Sunday.

Marais who is still only 20 years old, won the gold medal in the Men’s compound category, followed by Louw Nel of SKW who won silver and Dirk Bockmuhl of SKW who won bronze. Beanta Viviers won gold in the Women’s Compound category while Iroleen Page of Sparta Archery Club won silver. A total of 34 archers from five different clubs participated at the championships where a total of 15 new records were established.

The performances of the juniors and especially Sebastian Fechter and Hendre van Eeden was heartening, with the two establishing seven new records between them. The 13-year-old Fechter of SKW Archers won the U17 Cadet boys category, while Ruan van Staden of SKW Archers won the silver medal and Hardus Nel of SKW Archers the bronze medal.

The 12-year-old Hendre van Eeden of Tsumeb Archery Club won the U14 Cub Boys category, while Joern Diemer of Windhoek Bowmen Club won silver and Jan Eric Sack of Windhoek Bowmen won bronze. Gunther Woortman of SKW Archers won gold in the U21 Junior Men category while Christof Schaum of SKW Archers won silver.

Frank Bockmuhl of SKW Archers won the gold medal in the Masters Men’s category (Over 50) while Moritz Hoff of Windhoek Bowmen won silver and Rudi Woortman of SKW Archers won bronze. Frank Bockmuhl, the president of the Archery Association of Namibia said that it was a successful tournament.

“A total of 15 records in all age groups were established so that is an indication that the standard is improving. Especially the performances of some of our juniors were excellent and I would say that they are on a par with world standards,” he said. Bockmuhl said they hoped to enter Marais and Fechter for the Junior and Cadet World Championships which take place in Poland in August.

7th to 14th January 2012 Intensive Training Camp at SKW Archery Range
SKW ARCHERY

Sebastian Fechter, Annegret Fechter and Marja Woortman have left on Saturday, for Poland. Sebastian takes part at the Youth World Archery Championship. We all are hoping for the best, as this could be another mile stone for Archery at SKW. A group of SKW, Sparta and Tsumeb Archers are leaving on Wednesday morning, for Rustenburg. We are participating at the African Regional Field Archery championships. We will keep you informed on our "global participation"in Archery.

World Archery Youth Championship 2011 in Legnica Poland 22nd - 28th August

563 Archers with 184 coaches and officials from 56 countries participated in the WAYC in Legnica. Sebastian Fechter was selected to represent Namibia in compound cadet men division.

In the greens of the City Park the sports complex was used for the event. Two soccer fields with 60 butts were used during competition. Practise butts were on another field in the stadion, were the medal matches took place as well. It was a well organised championship, congratulation to the organisers of Poland. The recurve archers had a full FITA round as ranking round and the set system for eliminations. Compound archers shoot a 720 round at 50m as a ranking round and then eliminations.

Sebastian ended in the ranking round on 40th position out of 52 entries in compound cadet men with a score of 659. Bridger Deaton of USA was first with 699. For Namibia Sebastian has achieved a top score. Well done.
In the elminations he started off against L. Pardini (Italy) ranked 25th. Sebastian 139 lost against Pardini 144. At the end S. Hansen (Denmark) achieved gold, R. Domanski (Belgium) silver and  A.Davarci (Turkey) bronze. For further results visit www.archery.org/livescores/ .

In overall Sebastian was ranked 33rd with other archers at the end of this event. An excellent achievement for a first time at a world archery championship.

The next WAYC is set 2013 in China. I hope namibian archers prepare well in advance and that we will be able to sent 3 archers per division, that we can participate in team events too.

SKW Archery - Bogenschützen zum letzten Mal in diesem Jahr in Windhoek angetreten Build-It SKW Year-end Shoot.

Quelle:  AZ - online

New Year: 7th to 14th January 2012 Intensive Training Camp at SKW Archery Range

ARCHERY in Namibia has long celebrated an ever-increasing popularity in the country, along with several achievements at an international level.

A key player in the development and promotion of the sport is the Sport Klub Windhoek (SKW), which invested a great deal of its funds and time into modern facilities and the training of archers as well as mentors.

“Our vision is to create the possibility for training that reaches from the beginner up to the professional archer, who then can also compete at eyelevel with top archers in the world,” explains Marja Woortman, a newly qualified trainer of the Federation of International Target Archery (FITA) and the Federation of African Archery (FAA).

Woortman’s training experiences took her to several locations throughout the world, including the USA, South Africa, Poland and Turkey where she participated in courses, workshops or accompanied local archers to tournaments.

Local archers during a training session.
In the USA, Woortman attended several stages of a global training programme by the International Olympic Commission (IOC). There, participants had to analyse a deficiency that existed in their country and suggest a strategy to ensure progress in the specified sport.

“If a talent exists, we have to provide a training foundation on which that talent can develop,” says Woortman. This training should not only exist of frequent training shoots, but also include an exercise program for an overall physical and mental fitness.

These aspects were addressed at an intensive training camp for all Namibian archery clubs that took place from 9 to 14 January at the SKW. Under the professional supervision of Woortman and Joseph Preiser, a renowned South African archer and trainer, the participants went through daily practice sessions and evaluations of style and techniques.

The participating archers had the chance to receive advice for upcoming tournaments, like the Afro Pumps shoot at the SKW at the end of the month, and for the qualifications of the African Championships happening in March this year.

On the last day, the camp was concluded with fun shoots and games. “In the end, it’s not all about performance, but also about fun. We shouldn’t forget that archery is not only a sport for individuals, but also a sport for the whole family,” says Woortman. This becomes apparent when looking at the age range at the camp, which reaches from 7 years up to over 50 years.

However, the training camp did not only function as a workshop for the archers, but also served as a further education level for Marja Woortman. Out of three qualification levels of the FITA training course, Woortman had so far reached level 2. After the camp, Woortman was tested for the final level and passed successfully, thus becoming the first FITA Level 3 qualified trainer in Namibia. With this certificate on hand, she is now able to teach and test future archery trainers and continue raising the standard in the country.
